University of the South BA in English UT Chattanooga MEd in Secondary English

Mrs. Elizabeth Cairns

I am glad to be teaching 11th grade English at Bob Jones High School. I grew up in Chattanooga, TN, and attended Sewanee: The University of the South, where I majored in English and minored in Psychology. I also earned a Master of Education in Secondary English at UT Chattanooga.

My educational experience is varied—I have taught 8th, 11th, and 12th grade English, Yearbook, and reading and writing at the community college level. I have also tutored at all levels, homeschooled my children, subbed at all levels, served as a long-term sub in elementary schools, and worked as an AP testing coordinator.

My passion is teaching students to understand themselves, others, and the world as they prepare to leave high school. In my free time, you can find me reading, watching Netflix or movies with my family, playing games (especially trivia), hiking, walking my two dogs (two crazy Australian Shepherds,) and traveling. My husband is a recently retired Army Chaplain who is now the executive director of Warrior Freedom Service Dogs, and I have three teenagers. Two have recently graduated from Bob Jones and attend Samford University and one is a 10th grader at BJHS. This year I am teaching American literature to high school juniors--my favorite--and am excited to add Creative Writing in the spring semester.
