Military-Connected Families

Welcome to Madison, Alabama, where nearly 3,000 students of military-connected families attend our schools. Madison City School communities work diligently to support military families and address transitional challenges through the efforts of our students, teachers, counselors, school administrators, and the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) grant administrator. Federal Impact Aid has brought in nearly $5.5 million to Madison City Schools in the past. Additionally, we have acquired more than $15 million in DoDEA grant funds, which support our military-connected programs.
We are committed to partnering with you to ensure excellence in the education of military-connected students and in finding innovative ways to support our military families. For example, we celebrate military children and families with numerous special events throughout the school year, such as Veteran's Day assemblies, Month of the Military Family and Child events, Military Appreciation Night at football games, service projects, and much more! The Alabama Purple Star Schools Program is a collaborative initiative developed to recognize the efforts of K-12 schools in the state that are committed to supporting military students and their families, as they transition to their new homes and schools. The Alabama Purple Star Schools Program was established by the Legislature with the passage of Act 2021-7. This program recognizes local schools and was designed to lower high mobility challenges and increase military-friendly schools.
MCS schools were among the first group of schools to be awarded the Alabama Purple Star distinction in April 2022, with Journey Middle School receiving the designation in April 2024. All MCS schools renewed their Purple Star designation in April 2026. Notice our Purple Star banners when you visit!
The Purple Star School Program was designed to help mitigate the challenges of high mobility by setting standards and publicly designating military-friendly schools. The Purple Star Award recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military.
