January Is BOE Recognition Month
Madison City Board of Education members are front and center of all things Madison City Schools.
We thank them for their service.
January is School Board Member Recognition month. The theme in 2025 by the Alabama Association of School Boards is "Building Tomorrow's Future."
Our Board certainly lays the foundation for tomorrow's future by ensuring a solid education for students who will lead us in that future.
Our Board's leadership, insights, commitment, passion, and dedication to excellence are appreciated by all.
(L-R) BOE V.P. Travis Cummings, Scott Newberry, Tommy Overcash, Alice Lessmann, Supt. Dr. Ed Nichols, BOE President Tim Holtcamp.
Madison City BOE members are Tim Holtcamp (president), Travis Cummings (vice president), Alice Lessmann, Scott Newberry and Tommy Overcash. They are all true public servants, putting in tons of time and effort over their five year terms without compensation.
(L-R standing): Supt. Dr. Ed Nichols, BOE VP Travis Cummings, President Tim Holtcamp, member Tommy Overcash. (seated) BOE members Alice Lessmann, Scott Newberry.
You may see them at Board meetings, school plays and band performances. Or at the football stadium, in gyms at basketball and volleyball games, in an auditorium watching a theater performance, or poolside at swim and dive competitions.
You might catch one reading to a class, speaking to a PTA meeting, volunteering in the car line, or advocating for schools at a City Council meeting.
They attend graduations, school carnivals, EL summer classes, greenpower events, PreK programs, band concerts and Special Olympics.

They meet with legislators and city leaders to discuss school issues, undergo board training and attend conferences away from their family.
Each board member is appointed to staggered five-year terms. Since the formation of Madison City Schools in 1998, our MCS Board of Education members have elected not to receive compensation so that their work is done in the true nature of public service.|
The Board works with the superintendent in the overall governance of the school district, in setting the strategic plan and vision for the school system, and establishes policies as part of its governance role.
Board members are highly engaged in our school system - each member having had or currently has children attending school in Madison.
Board members actively participate on numerous committees and are present at numerous school and district activities throughout the school year.
Let’s all take the time to give them thanks for all that they do.
