🎼 Hello Heritage! I am honored to be your music teacher! I love sharing music and bringing joy to our students' lives. It is exciting to see students' eyes light up when they learn something new and feel proud of what they have accomplished. Music class has the magical effect of engaging all students, whether it be with singing, dance, instruments, theory activities, creative movement, rhythm reading, composing, improvisation, cross-curricular connections or another aspect that spikes their interest. It has a special way of bringing out students' creativity, personality and imagination. Performing music also activates both hemispheres of the brain, develops hand-eye coordination, enhances lung capacity, develops breath control, strengthens listening skills and creates a sense of teamwork and community. It is crucial to childhood development.
I began teaching music in the Madison City school system in 2006! Over the years, I have had the privilege of working at every elementary school in Madison, in one capacity or another. There were times when I taught at 4 different schools in one year! This year, we have a music, art, Spanish and STEM teacher at every elementary school, all year! I am thrilled about this new adventure and excited to see how it will impact our school community!
I love teaching in the classroom as well as working with students outside the classroom. I am co-director of our city-wide fifth grade honor chorus. I have students perform annually in state honor choirs such as AMEA State Festival, Young Voices and All-State. I teach various clubs, ranging from drum clubs to recorder clubs, ukulele clubs, and school choir. I also have the honor of being our schools' Arts' Liaison.
Before becoming a teacher, I attended the University of Alabama Huntsville on music and academic scholarships with concentrations in clarinet, voice & saxophone. Over the years, I have enjoyed playing in wind ensembles, jazz bands, jazz combos, woodwind quintets, percussion ensembles, theater productions and singing in a variety of choirs! I also love dancing as often as possible!
I am married with two beautiful twin step-daughters who are currently in college. We have a very sweet, hyperactive dog named Milo, a sweet, timid dog named Tawney, and 2 parakeets named Brucie and Xander. In my spare time, I enjoy playing instruments, attending concerts, going to the beach, going on walks, dancing, swimming, kayaking, shopping, volunteering, recycling, arts & crafts, hiking, hammocking, badminton, volleyball, scrapbooking, horse riding, crossword puzzles, word games, amusement parks and more!
