What should my new student expect from a school with eS2S?The school registrar notifies Mrs. Butler, SPARC counselor, via email, when a new student enrolls. Mrs. Butler then greets the new student in his/her classroom or in PE so that the new student can "draw" for a house color, which corresponds to a positive character trait. Fellow students cheer as the new student draws and then congratulate him/her upon his house selection. The new student then receives a house color t-shirt and is assigned a house parent and is welcomed as a part of the Mill Creek Family. eS2S Ambassadors escort and be-friend new students as they attend the new student socials.
Applications for eS2S Ambassadors are available each spring. Mrs. Butler "recruits" by going into 3rd and 4th grade PE classes to tell ALL students about this excellent opportunity. Because eS2S Ambassadors are highly visible in the school--wearing their PURPLE t-shirts, hosting new student socials each semester, leading the Pledge, maintaining/donating the lost and found, leading tours, greeting at PTA meetings and other events, welcoming and assisting new students and their families, and performing service projects for Veterans in November and February and for Military Children in April, students WANT to participate in these fun-filled activities!
eS2S Ambassadors are often called upon to serve as knowledgeable greeters to serve at various school events because they conduct themselves in a friendly manner and are able to interact with others well.
eS2S Ambassadors must maintain A/B grade averages. By doing so, they set an example for other students who see them as role models. For example, they assist the younger students with activities at our new student socials.
At the beginning of the school year, eS2S gave tours to new students and their families. In November, cards were made and presented to our Veteran families at the PTA meeting, throughout the winter they neatly maintained and then donated lost and found items to a local charity, in February they brought donations (personal hygiene, snacks) and made cards for Tut Fann Veterans Home in Huntsville, AL, and 5th grade eS2S lead the Pledge over the intercom daily.
Each summer, PTA provides tours for new students and their families. eS2S Ambassadors gladly volunteer their time to guide them throughout our school and are eager to provide information about our community and state.
Each semester, new students are invited to a new student social. An eS2S Ambassador escorts each student to the social where snacks are served, games are played, and the new students are made to feel very special and honored at this event. Plus, eS2S tell the new students about our "house families" and how we all "fit in" to Mill Creek!
In training, we discuss what 100% Acceptance means: Treating EVERYONE with respect and kindness. We talk about scenarios where "people are different than we are" and come up with ways we can always be gracious and model this behavior for others as well.
Our eS2S Ambassadors have become known as the “go to” team when something is needed. They serve as greeters for new students and their families, PTA meetings, visitors from other schools and even the DoDEA, and have donated items to foster kids and veterans as well as leading the Pledge daily. eS2S wants to be known as THE SERVICE CLUB at Mill Creek and feel that the team is definitely on its way!
