  • MCS Teacher and Student Award Recognition by Local VFW Post

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 5162 in Madison recently recognized the winners of their Teacher of the Year awards and student contests. The contests, which promote patriotism and understanding of American history, included the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen competitions.

The Voice of Democracy contest, which has been held annually since 1947, is open to high school students. This year’s theme was “Is America Today Our Forefathers’ Vision?” Dillon Tremblay, a senior at James Clemens High School, was named the runner-up in this contest.

The Patriot’s Pen contest, aimed at middle school students, encourages participants to explore American history and society. The theme for this year’s contest was “My Voice in America’s Democracy,” and Neil Dube, a 7th grader at Journey Middle School, emerged as the winner.

In addition to recognizing students, the VFW also presented their Teacher of the Year awards. Amber Moore, an EL teacher at Heritage Elementary School, received the Teacher of the Year honor. The runner-ups were Brooke Sigler, a 2nd-grade teacher at Madison Elementary School, and Rachel McGee, a social studies teacher at Liberty Middle School.

The VFW contests provide students with a platform to express their thoughts on American democracy while offering over $2 million in scholarships at local, state, and national levels, encouraging personal growth and a deeper appreciation for the country’s history and values.
