• World Language Proficiency Assessments

    STAMP: The STAMP 4S and WS tests are given twice a year. It is recommended for classroom language learners to take this assessment at the end of level 4. Students may try at the end of level 3, if desired. The test is computer-based and consists of speaking, writing, and interpretative reading and listening (4 segments total). Students must achieve Intermediate Mid 5 or higher on all segments of the assessment. Students may retest on segments where a passing score has not yet been achieved. Seniors must pass all segments by the approved date in order to qualify for the seal prior to graduation.

    The STAMP 4S exam is available in the following languages: Arabic, English (non-native speakers only), French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin (Simplified), Mandarin (Traditional), Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, and Spanish. Sample tests can be found here.

    Latin students will take the STAMP Latin. For Latin, the students are tested on interpretive reading.

    The STAMP WS is available in 37 less commonly tested languages, such as Telugu, Turkish, and Vietnamese. The full list of languages available can be found here. 

    AP Exam: This test is given once a year following completion of level 5 of French, German, Latin, or Spanish. It is a paper-based assessment consisting of interpretive listening and reading, speaking, and writing for modern languages. For Latin, the test consists of interpretative reading and translation. Students must achieve a score of 3 or higher on their exam. For more details about this exam, click here. 12th graders may use their AP language score to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy; however, because AP scores are not available until July after graduation, these students should consider taking the STAMP exam (French, German, or Spanish) or the STAMP (Latin) to ensure the receipt of their medal for their graduation ceremony.

    OPI/WPT: This set of tests is available in the Spring semester for 11th and 12th graders only. It consists of a one-on-one interview with an examiner for the speaking proficiency. For the writing, the student is given prompts to which they respond in their target language. This assessment is available for 24 less commonly tested languages, such as Albanian, Bangla, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Croatian, Dari, Gujarati, Hebrew, Malayalam, Ukrainian, Urdu. Students must score Intermediate Mid on both parts of the exam. More details about this assessment can be found here.
