Journey Middle and James Clemens Students Earn DAR Awards
Congratulations to Journey Middle School 8th grader Kyla Chandrakasem and JCHS senior Finley Koswoski for winning an essay contest sponsored by the Rainbolt Mountain Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
Miranda Cassell, American HIstory Chair for the Rainbolt Mountain Chapter NSDAR, explains the awards here:
American History Essay Contest for grade levels 5-8
Journey Middle School 8th grader Kyla Chandrakasem won BOTH at the chapter level AND 3rd place at the state level. Miss Chandrakasem was awarded one certificate and a bronze medal for her chapter win. She also received a second certificate and a cash award for her state win. Her teacher, Christi Moore, joined us for the awards ceremony and we recognized Mrs. Moore for her service as a teacher.
Excellence in American History DAR Award
This award is non-competitive and not based on grades. This award is given to students who demonstrate genuine interest in American History. More than one award may be given in a year.
Local historian John Rankin recommended James Clemens High School Senior Finley Koswoski for this award. Miss Koswoski earned her Girl Scout Gold Award as a sophomore by working with Mr. Rankin and Billie Goodson of the Madison Station Historical Preservation Society on a project to create content about historic sights in Madison City for a mobile app called Pocket Sights. Miss Koswoski spent over 100 hours on this project which included interviewing historic area residents and distilling research into a usable form for the app. This app allows visitors to Madison’s historic area to take self-guided tours. Forty-two sites are included in the tour. Finley’s project has been featured in the Madison Record newspaper, Madison Living Magazine, the City of Madison Alabama website, WHNT News 19, WAAY 31 News, and WAFF 48 News. Madison Living Magazine has some wonderful photos!
