Madison City Schools celebrated the long-awaited opening of a wing at Bob Jones High School that will include special education classrooms.
Several school, city and state dignitaries were on hand for today's (Sept. 1, 2023) ribbon-cutting. The timing around Labor Day had some significance, given the years of work and effort that went into finally adding special education classrooms at BJHS like at James Clemens High School.



The addition means these students in the Bob Jones feeder pattern can remain with their peers from their elementary and middle school when they progress to high school.
The middle schools, including the new Journey Middle, now have similar classrooms for these students.
Students at JCHS who will now attend BJHS in the new wing visited the facility yesterday. Classes there will be up and running Sept. 5 after Labor Day.
The new building addition will also house some general education classrooms, a tornado shelter, offices and an E-sports room.

Travis Cummings, vice president of the Madison City Board of Education, said the new wing affirms the school system's mission statement of "Empowering ALL Students for Global Success."
Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols, BJHS Principal Sylvia Lambert, MCS Special Education Director Dr. Susan Zinkil and Mayor Paul Finley also spoke at today's ribbon cutting.
