Every member of the Discovery Middle School Chess Team must try out to make the team. Because of the gobal pandemic, we must modify our tryout procedure. DMS Chess Team tryouts will occur in three stages beginning on June 1st. After you complete this application and let us know what your ChessKid Username is, you will be added to a 2020-2021 DMS Tryout Club on ChessKid.
Stage 1: Puzzles Everyone in the DMS Tryout Club on ChessKid will be required to solve at least 100 chess puzzles in the month of June. There will also be a June puzzle contest among those trying out, and at the end of the contest at 9 p.m. on June 30th, everyone trying out will be assigned points based on their ranking in the puzzle contest. First place will receive the most points, and last place will receive the least points (number of points determined by the number of people trying out). So, the more puzzles you solve in the month of June, the better your chances to make the team in the fall.
Stage 2: Online Tournament Online chess has become increasingly important during the pandemic, during periods of quarantine, and in the chess world. The USCF has now added published ratings for online blitz and online rapid chess games. Also, online playoffs have been utilized by the Alabama Chess Federation to determine our state's Denker and Barber representative during the pandemic when over the board games could not be played. The DMS Tryout Club will hold an online tournament on ChessKid on Wednesday, July 1st at 7 p.m. The time control will be Game 20 for 5 rounds. You will be assigned points at the conclusion of the tournament according to your placement in the final results. First place wil receive the most points, and last place will receive the least points.
Stage 3: Simultaneous Chess Match (if social distancing circumstances permit) The coach for the DMS Chess Team will conduct a simultaneous chess match with those who make the cut to proceed to this final stage of tryouts.
8th graders (rising 9th graders): Tryouts for the 2020-2021 BJHS Chess Team will occur in July. More information will be shared soon.
