Renovated PreK Adds to Lineup of MCS Schools
Madison City Schools has relocated its PreK Center to the former West Madison Elementary School building off Wall Triana Highway.
The first day was Oct. 26 when 12 classrooms formerly housed in two campuses on Nance Road moved in the new West Madison school building.
The building has room to grow at least another nine classrooms, of 18 students each.
WHNT-19 came Oct. 31 to capture the new PreK in operation. See story here:
West Madison Elementary closed in 2021 after nearly 70 years of service educating children at its Wall Triana location.
The school actually dates back to 1920 when the original one was built on nearby Pension Row to educate African-American children during the days of segregation. A devastating fire resulted in the relocation to the current site on Wall Triana where it opened in 1953 and remained an elementary school until closing two years ago.
The $7.3 million makeover included new floors, furnishings, ceilings, safety and technology enhancements, bathroom fixtures, and outdoor improvements that will include new playground equipment and signage.
The larger facility should help ease waiting lists to get into MCS PreK program as new classrooms are authorized by the state.
A ribbon cutting and public open house will be scheduled soon at the new PreK campus for Madison City Schools.
