Ms. Sevim O Whitaker
I am very happy to be with our students and families at Midtown Elementary School. I am a mother of two beautiful married children who have been blessed to share with me three young granddaughters! My father is an immigrant from Turkey and my mother came from the country hills of Calhoun, Tennessee. Early in my life, I learned how to communicate with children from around the world.
I began my education as an elementary teacher with Hoover City Schools, in Hoover, Alabama. Later, I received my Masters in English as a New Language, and became an ESL teacher. From there, I received my National Boards in this area as well. I continued my educational field by earning my Educational Specialist Degree and an Administrative certification.
After teaching ESL, I later went to the Department of Education to work with the School Improvement Team and also the School Improvement ESL Team. This position transitioned into an EL Regional Coach with the Department of Education. I continued my educational journey by working in administration for Pelham City Schools. I was the Federal Programs Coordinator and the ESL Coordinator for the system. I have learned much in my educational career and I look forward to working with my students and their families.
Currently, I am working with ESL students in grades 3-5. My curriculum focuses on reading comprehension, using text evidence to support their reading answers, and on writing complete sentences. All lessons encourage listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
