Mr. James P. Maguire
If you’re viewing this web page, there’s a good chance you’re wondering, “Who the heck is Mr. Maguire, and how will he be as my (or my child’s) teacher?”
I have always loved reading -- but it wasn’t until the first time I helped my youngest brother with it that I actually considered teaching as a career. To my parents, it probably seemed like an ordinary moment in the backseat on a family trip. To me, helping him sound out letters and make them meaningful for himself instilled in me a sense of pride and purpose.
Today, my brother is a college graduate with a degree in business, but I’m still living for those “light bulb” moments: seeing a student’s face gradually shift from puzzled to comprehending, nervous to confident.
Experience
In 2006, I graduated from Wilmington Friends School in Wilmington, DE, receiving both high school and IB diplomas.
In 2009, I graduated magna cum laude from Washington College in Chestertown, MD, as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Tau Delta honor societies, with a B.A. in English.
In 2011, I graduated from Washington College with a M.A. in English, at which time I became an Associate Teacher at Wilmington Friends School, my alma mater. There, I worked with elementary and middle school students full-time as a classroom teacher and after-school counselor.
In 2013, I moved from my hometown in Delaware to Huntsville, AL, and joined Randolph School’s faculty as an English and drama teacher in the middle school, where I taught, coached, and advised students for four years.
In 2017, I accepted a position at St. John Paul II Catholic High School, where I taught ninth- and tenth-grade students English, also serving as faculty representative and coach for the varsity wrestling team.
