Education

Emily Lewis graduated from the University of Alabama in 2016. While in Tuscaloosa, she earned a B.S.E. in Secondary Language Arts Education as well as a B.A. in Theatre. She did her Capstone Undergraduate Research on the benefits of incorporating the arts into the core curriculum, with special attention paid to the use of Theatre to teach Social Studies and STEM concepts. For this research, she received 2nd Place in Educational Research at the URCCA conference.  

Experience

Ms. Lewis, known as "Miss L" to her students, previously taught at Park Crossing High School in Montgomery, Alabama, and at Centre Middle School in Cherokee County, Alabama. With her backgrounds in ELA and Theatre, she has taught 11th and 12th Grade English, 7th Grade Literature, Creative Writing, Public Speaking, Debate, and a wide variety of Theatre Courses.

Outside of the public school system, she has been teaching theatre at summer camps and after school programs with Northeast Alabama College and with her own youth theatre company, the Players in Progress, since she was sixteen. 

Biography

Emily grew up in the small town of Sylvania, Alabama, on Sand Mountain in DeKalb County. She attended school "in the valley" to graduate from Fort Payne High School; she was the first person in her family to finish high school and then the first to attend college. She received a full academic scholarship to attend the University of Alabama as well as being granted a scholarship for Stage Management with UA's Department of Theatre and Dance. Since graducating she has lived in Decatur, Montgomery, Cedar Bluff, and now in Madison (though she often returns to Sylvania to visit her mother and her pet llama, Frederick). 

Emily's greatest joy in life has always been stories. Reading them, writing them, watching them on screen, and especially listening to others tell them. She still spends most of her free time with a book or a podcast. As she got older, though, she found her favorite form of stories when she was able to attend her first play while on a middle school field trip. She now loves acting and directing for stories presented on the stage. With more than forty theatre productions under her belt, she's still as in love with the theatre as when she was watching "The Tell-Tale Heart" on stage as a sixth grader -- maybe more! Her greatest wish has since been to bring theatre to children who were just like her.
