Mrs. Astrid Horst
I have been working with people of all ages that have special needs since I was a senior in high school. I frequently helped in my mother’s Speech Language Pathology small groups, and went on to volunteer for an organization called TASK (Team Activities for Special Kids) during their Social Club Nights. My interest in building relationships and fostering independent growth soon led me to become a YMCA inclusion counselor for 5 years during summer camps and latchkey programs. I worked with the YMCA and substitute teaching in the Greater St. Louis Area until completing my degree. I finally did my student teaching and my first 2 years of teaching in the Francis Howell School District in the Greater St. Louis Area. During student teaching I was introduced to teaching Social and Life Skills, which I found to be extremely rewarding for both me and my students. I then got married and moved to St. James, MO where I taught both in a self-contained and collaborative setting. Finally, my husband received a job offer in Huntsville, so we made another transition. Madison Schools has been a great place to learn and teach!
