Mrs. Shanaya Thompson

Hello! My name is Shanay Thompson, and though this is my first year being a School Counselor in Madison city schools, this will be my fourth year working with students in this field. I have a passion for Social/Emotional Learning (SEL), and am eager to be a part of this wonderful school community!

I began my postsecondary education with a Bachelors of Science degree in Psychology at Liberty University graduating in May 2014. Once finished I knew I wanted to work with students from a counseling perspective and made the decision to get my Masters in Education with an endorsement for School counseling. I graduated with this degree in December 2016 and retained my license to counsel students from PreK-12 grade.

Upon graduating with my Masters, I immediately began my work as a School Counselor internationally in Singapore. There I worked with students in all divisions and from all over the world!! I was given an opportunity to travel to many countries and see the importance of social emotional learning for students in all areas of education and culture.

I was able to spend two wonderful years in Singapore as a School Counselor before transitioning back to the United States. From there I spent the past year working at an elementary school in Ringgold Georgia before settling down here in Madison Alabama.

As your School Counselor, I will be working with students in three different areas; academic, personal/social, and career. In a school environment we are not only looking to help students academically, we are also educating them in their social emotional skills as well. As their counselor, I understand that there are several avenues of a child that can affect all areas of their educational achievement. It is my mission to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and parents to make sure that we are addressing all areas of students educational development and providing the best opportunity for them to succeed.

Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my husband of over 14 years, and our 3 wonderful children. I love traveling, reading, trying new things, and spending time with my family. I live a colorful life, and believe that everyone should be loved and valued, and I strive to treat others in this respect.

I am very excited to begin this new school year with such a wonderful school community, and I look forward to getting to know everyone. I've never met a stranger, so please don't hesitate to say hello!

Have a WONDERFUL and COLORFUL school year!!

All the best,

Shanaya Thompson
