• 6th Grade English Language Arts

    Course Description:

Sixth grade Language Arts will continue students’ growth in the areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, discussion, and reflection. Reading strategies, critical thinking skills, vocabulary building, and a continued focus on writing comprise the main elements of reading instruction. The focus for writing instruction will be narrative, informational, and argumentative writing with requirements based on Alabama College and Career Ready standards. The overall goal of the class is to increase the literacy and writing ability of students. Outside reading and summer reading are required.

    Course Objectives:

Students will read poems, fiction, and nonfiction texts using skills mandated by the state standards. Students will participate in classroom activities, including group discussions and class presentations. Tests for ELA will be given on Wednesdays and Fridays.  This course will have a midterm and a final exam.

    Classroom Expectations:

    • Students will respect classroom instructional time and the learning environment.
    • Students will respect themselves, each other, and their teacher at all times.
    • Students will take the initiative to talk to their teacher regarding their grades and other classroom related concerns.
    • Academic dishonesty is taken seriously at DMS, and it will not be tolerated in this classroom. Students are expected to complete their own work; failure to comply with academic honesty will result in a zero on the assignment.

Requests for accommodations for this course or any school event are welcomed from students and parents.

    Concerning laptop utilization:

    1. Student laptops should not be hard wired to the network or have print capabilities.

    2. Use of discs, flash drives, jump drives, or other USB devices will not be allowed on Madison City computers.

    Grading Policy:

Test grades will account for 60% of the 9-weeks grade, with the remaining 40% being determined by quiz/daily grades.  The grading scale is as follows: A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (65-69), and F (below 65). Grades will be a reflection of mastery of the standards.  Make sure all absences are excused as class work can be made up and graded for excused absences only.

    Make-up Test Policy:

Students should schedule a time with their teacher to make-up tests within one week.  Make-up tests will usually be given before school, after school, or during an elective class.
