In Madison City schools, pre-school through fifth grade is considered elementary school level. Every elementaryschool student attends music class once a week for 40 minutes for one semester. During class, students study vocal training, ear training, basic movement, rhythm instruments, Orff instruments and recorder. Students first learn skills such as matching pitch while singing, keeping a steady beat with body percussion and playing simple rhythm instruments. They move on to more involved skills as they progress through the grade levels. Lessons also include cultural and cross-curriculum connections. In this section, you will find basic curriculum learning guidelines used for each grade level. Click on the grade level to download the learning guide.
