Chess / Destination Imagination Teams Honored by BOE For Stellar Wins

Madison City Chess players and students on Destination Imagination Teams were honored at the May 8 MCS Board of Education meeting. MCS Board President Ranae Bartlett announced the awards and presented certificates as president of the Madison City Chess League.

The High School chess team of Michael Guthrie, Josh Lin, Hayden Billmann, and Will Bao from Bob Jones High School placed 1st in the  recent State Chess Tournament in Mobile. They are coached by Bill Nash and Bradley Denton.
The Middle School team of Jenson Wilhelm, Victor Lundy, Constance Wang and Edward Calinski at Discovery Middle and sponsored by Julie Goldston placed 1st as well.
The Elementary team of Xavier Bruni, Geon Park, Karsten Wallace, and Zachary Calinsky of Rainbow Elementary coached by Will Stevenson placed 1st.
Madiison City chess players also racked up numerous awards in the recent All-Girls State Chess Championship at Bob Jones High School, including first place finishes in the Primary School Team division (Rainbow Elementary) and the Elementary K-6 Team (Heritage Elementary) taking 1st place. Here is a complete breakdown of individual and team winners from both state championships.

The Destination Imagination teams from Madison City Schools again kept up their tradition of winning in state and regional competitions.
DI Sponsor Robin Dauma said this will be the 11th year in a row that Madison City schools will be sending more teams to the annual Destination Imagination Global Finals in Knoxville. Here is a complete roster of DI teams  and their members, most of which will be competing in the global finals later this month. Team photos are below.
